Description
17 and 17A George Street is a house and two shops dating from the early 19th century, with a core that dates back to around 1500. The building is constructed of grey gault and red brick, topped with a slate roof and has a rectangular plan. It stands two storeys high.
The south front elevation features three bays with pilasters and an upper string course. The eastern end curves into the facade of No. 2 Cross Street. It has deep eaves supported by paired modillions and two gault brick stacks. The ground floor includes two early 20th-century shop fronts with plate glass panes. The doorway for No. 17, located within No. 2 Cross Street, has a moulded panelled doorcase, with the door featuring an upper glazed light and a lower moulded panel. No. 17A has a similar door.
On the first floor, the windows are sashes with glazing bars, each with two 4x4 panes. There is a similar window in the unit of No. 2 Cross Street that has three 3x4 panes. The rear, or north elevation, has a ground floor slated lean-to and the first floor is made of red brick, featuring two tall metal casement windows with two 4 panes each, as well as a wooden window with two 6 panes. A large gault brick stack rises through the pitch of the principal slate roof.
Inside, there is a roll moulded bridging joist from around 1500 in the shop of No. 17, which continues from the shop in No. 2 Cross Street. The unusual junction between No. 17 and No. 2 Cross Street appears to have been influenced by a large late medieval building.
