Description
Barnston Lodge is a late 18th-century house built of gault brick, featuring a hipped grey slate roof. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a five-window range of double-hung small-paned sashes. The central three windows project forward under a pediment with a segmental head panel. The ground floor includes semi-circular extensions on both the left and right sides. The central entrance door has an arched brick head, with a sculptured face as the keystone, and brick arches above the two flanking windows. There are two brick bands on the facade, and the entrance is approached by semi-elliptical steps leading to a six-panel door with a fine light above.
Inside, most original features are preserved. The hall has four arched doorways and a central arch supported by a fluted column with a plain capital, leading to a stairway with a wreathed handrail, moulded spring, and plain balusters. The stairwell is topped by an oval cupola with glazing bars. The interior also features moulded window and door frames, wainscot and dados, with some dados being panelled. There are six-panelled doors, a fine late 18th-century fire surround, and several later but still good surrounds. Some rooms have panelled reveals to the windows, and the kitchen includes servants' bells and a whip/horn rack over the fireplace.
