Description
This barn, built in 1809, stands to the north of Rowley Hill Farmhouse. Constructed of red brick, with some burnt elements, and a slate roof, it is rectangular in plan, comprising five bays. The south front displays a symmetrical arrangement of three rows of slit wind-eyes. A central waggon way is visible, incorporating a loading door with weatherboarding on either side; a more modern metal sheet door is also present. Further loading doors are located on the middle and upper levels of both sides of the barn. The east end features a gable with tumbled brickwork and an inscribed stone "G Gibson" dated 1809. An integral rear lean-to extends from the main barn, providing two central loading doors. The west end is similar to the east, though the rear is obscured. It includes a single, segmental-headed loading doorway with an owl hole at the apex. The north rear elevation is simpler, with a central waggon way, a modern metal door, and wind-eyes.
Inside, the barn has oak and softwood framing with straight, slender members and a single aisle. A surviving post displays a straight rear shore. The roof structure shows high, cranked arcade braces, bolted knee braces, simple trapped side purlins, and a bladed scarf joint within the arcade plate.
