Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a church that likely dates back to the 12th century but was largely demolished in 1863 and rebuilt in 1864. It features a flint rubble wall with stone dressings. The west tower has diagonal buttresses and a castellated parapet. The north transept, which is from the 15th century, along with the roofs of the north transept and nave, showcases 15th-century moulded and cambered tie beams with crown posts that have moulded caps and bases, as well as curved braces. A notable feature is the early 15th-century chancel screen, which includes intricate carving and traceried work. Inside the north transept, there is a wall monument to Sir William Waad, who died in 1623, made of black stone and marble. The church is situated at a key point in the village and is recognized for its topographical significance and internal features, especially the 15th-century chancel screen.
