Description

This is a late 17th-century barn situated approximately 60 metres west north west of Leaden Roding Hall. The barn is timber framed and has been clad with weatherboarding, covered by a roof of plain tiles. It comprises eight bays arranged north-south, with midstreys (internal partition walls) located at bays 3 and 6. Lean-to extensions project to the east of bays 1-2 and 7-8. The walls incorporate joggled girts and primary straight bracing. Internally, there are jowled storey posts, massive square tiebeams, and arch braces connecting to the tiebeams. Each roof truss features a single high collar and two inclined queen posts, with two through-purlins in each roof pitch. The barn has a half-hipped gable at both ends. Constructed from Baltic pine in long, straight sections with pegged joints, this barn is an unusually early example of softwood use, contemporary with the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire of 1666.
