Description
There are two chest tombs located 5 meters south-west of the church in Saffron Walden's Saint Mary's churchyard. These tombs date from the early 19th century and rest on a common base. The southern tomb features an inscription on its south face that reads "Henry Archer 1822." It is made of Portland stone and has a plinth with clasping corner buttresses, each consisting of four clustered shafts. The lid is shaped, and both the east and west end faces have niches containing draped fluted urns. The northern tomb is similar in design but is made of oolitic stone and has a single urn on the east end. Its inscriptions are weathered, but the south face reads "Martin Catlin 1815."
