Description

The outbuilding located north of Nos 6 and 6A on Church Street in Saffron Walden is a Grade II listed structure. This isolated building is situated at the northern end of the garden of Nos 6 and 6A, adjacent to St Mary's churchyard. It dates back to the 16th century, with an 18th-century facing on the northern side. The building features a timber-framed and plastered construction with a red brick and peg-tiled roof, and it has an L-shaped plan with two storeys.

On the northern elevation facing the churchyard, the outbuilding is single-storey brick with a central doorway that has a moulded architrave and a boarded door. Above the doorway, there is a central tie-beam supported by two-bayed framing, and the roof is half hipped at the eastern end to accommodate the southern wing. The western elevation is a blank plastered wall with a ground floor doorway and a small stair light above it. The roof construction includes trapped side purlins.

The southern elevation descends to garden level below the churchyard and features a timber-framed and plastered southern wing, supported by a brick pier at the eastern corner. The ground floor has a four-panelled door, while the first floor has a plain fixed window. The gable projects with a gap to the roof space beneath the projection, and there is a second window on the upper floor of the main block, consisting of two casement lights. The eastern side of the adjoining garden wall running south shows a recess and broken brickwork, suggesting that the building originally extended further south but has since been cut back.

Inside, the upper floor retains stout 16th-century framing with exterior tension bracing. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments records that it is said to have formed part of a former malting.
