Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a Grade I listed building located in Berden. It is a cruciform structure made of flint rubble and stone. The nave primarily dates from the 12th century, though it contains remnants of Saxon long and short work in the western corner. The chancel and transepts were built in the 13th century, with the chancel undergoing partial rebuilding in the 19th century. The west tower, which is plain and lacks buttresses, dates from the 15th century and features a pyramid roof behind a castellated parapet. The south porch was added in the 19th century, and there has been significant restoration during this period. Notable interior fittings include a fine 17th-century octagonal pulpit, a brass memorial for William Turnor and his wife from 1473, and another brass from 1607. The church is situated away from the current village, highlighting its historical significance. It is recognized for its architectural and historical value.
