Description

A pair of houses, formerly a poorhouse, dating from about 1600 with alterations in the 18th century. The buildings are two storeys high and constructed with a timber frame and a gabled clay peg tile roof. Cherry Cottage has been plastered, while Chestnut Cottage is clad in black painted boarding. Cherry Cottage features a single-storey, peg-tile-roofed lean-to extension to the front, along with a gable-end stack and a ridgeline stack. It has 20th-century diamond leaded light casement windows. Chestnut Cottage has 20th-century small pane casements and 19th-century casements with central horizontal glazing bars. A ridgeline stack sits above an inglenook fireplace, featuring a moulded mantel beam. The brickwork above this mantel beam has been rebuilt. The original building, dating to about 1600, included a service crosswing at the west end, which previously had a rear jetty and has since been significantly reduced in height. The main 'hall' range has an unusual plan, with indications of a central spine wall extending through two storeys, featuring deep section stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The structure is substantially built and was altered in the late 18th century to create a poorhouse.
