Description
The Audley End Tunnel South Portal is a railway tunnel portal built in 1845 by Robert Stephenson for the Eastern Counties Railway. It features a semi-circular design made of red brick and stone. The outer stone ring is decorated with alternating Tudor portcullis and rose bosses. Inside, there is a ring of five courses of brickwork and a rusticated stone arch, which has a keystone displaying the Braybrooke coat of arms in bas relief. Surrounding this are five concentric receding rings of brickwork, all supported by a rusticated stone plinth on each side. The tunnel was constructed to maintain the privacy of Audley End House.
