Description

The Littlebury Tunnel South Portal is a railway tunnel portal built in 1845 by Robert Stephenson for the Eastern Counties Railway. It features an Egyptian-style design made of yellow brick and stone. The upward-tapering brick facade is topped with a stone cornice and entablature. The tunnel mouth is formed by a semicircular stone arch, which is surrounded by five concentric receding rings of brickwork, all resting on a rusticated stone plinth on each side. The tunnel was constructed to maintain the privacy of Audley End House.
