Description

Borough Farmhouse is a late 14th-century house with early 16th-century extensions, situated on the south side of Bolford Street, Thaxsted. The house is timber framed and plastered, with a red plain tile roof. It is two storeys high and has a three-bay, three-window front with modern casement windows. Partially rebuilt 16th-century red brick chimney stacks are present. The western range originally comprised an open hall house, with a floored end bay to the west and a jettied cross wing to the east. The eastern cross wing was formerly gabled but now oversailed. The timber frame is visible externally, featuring multiple bracing. A 16th-century extension to the east has a long wall jetty. Internally, much of the original timber frame remains, showcasing richly moulded and crenellated beams, jowled storey posts, cambered tie beams, and crown post roofs. A screens passage is incorporated into the cross wing, opening into the hall through a wide arch.
