Description
The Cemetery Chapel, built in 1857 by architect James Pigott Pritchett, is a Grade II listed building located on Radwinter Road in Saffron Walden. This chapel is constructed from ragstone with ashlar dressings and features a fishscale slate roof adorned with cresting. Designed in the Decorated Gothic style, it consists of three bays and includes a northwest bell tower that incorporates a porch.
The north elevation showcases a two-stage square tower with an offset upper stage, which supports an open octagonal ashlar spire. This spire is decorated with gableted cinque-foil bell openings, offset buttresses topped with crocketted pinnacles, and a saltire weather-vane. The porch features a segmental pointed arch with carved headstops and a rib-vault with a central boss and demi-angel corbels. There are single trefoil-headed lancet windows under hood-moulds, with naturalistic foliage stops on the west side and pairs of similar windows on the east side, along with a pair above the entrance arch.
The body of the chapel has a plinth and buttresses, with two two-light traceried windows that have different carved headstops. The south elevation includes three similar windows, showcasing two types of tracery. The east wall features a three-light curvilinear window with headstops, and a floriated cross at the apex of the gable. The west end mirrors this design.
Inside, the chapel boasts an arched braced king-post roof supported by foliate corbels, a black and red ceramic tiled floor, and pews with traceried end panels.
