Description
Leez Priory Inner Gate House, dating from the 16th century, is constructed of red brick with black end patterning. It features stone dressings on the windows, parapets, and crenellations, along with a stone Coat of Arms above the courtyard archway. The building has crenellated, octagonal turrets at each corner, rising three storeys, with the southeast turret containing the original solid tread staircase. The east-facing turrets are decorated with diapering and paneling in three stages, each adorned with a band of trefoil-moulded bricks.
The section between the turrets, located above the archway, consists of two storeys, each housing a large room with stone mullion and transomed windows on the east and west sides. This block is topped with gabled parapets made of brick and stone panels, culminating in a stone finial. There is a moulded stone archway on the west face and a moulded brick archway on the east face, with the stone arch featuring fleur-de-lys and rose decorative spandrels, while the brick arch displays shields.
The structure also includes four finely decorated, moulded red brick octagonal chimney stacks, three recessed arches, and remnants of former buildings on the site, which dates back to after 1536 when the priory of the Augustinian Canons was dissolved and largely demolished. Early 20th-century restorations were carried out by Chancellor. The boundary of Felsted in Uttlesford and Great and Little Leighs in Chelmsford runs through the site. Additionally, a stone hexagonal conduit in the Gothic style is listed as Grade II, along with two barns to the south of Leez Priory, built of 16th-century red brick with red plain tile roofs and some original windows. The east barn has five bays, while the west barn has six bays. The majority of the Inner Gate House is located in Felsted.
