Description
Thorpe Baptist Church is a Baptist church built in 1803. It features a timber frame, is weatherboarded and roughcast, and has a roof covered with old grey slates. The church has a rectangular plan facing southwest, with a single-storey block at the rear and stands two storeys tall. On the ground floor, there are two 19th or early 20th century sash windows with 16 lights each. The first floor has two original sash windows with 4 + 8 lights, made with crown glass. The front entrance includes 20th century double doors beneath an original gabled canopy supported by scrolled brackets, with the left side later boarded up. The front elevation is roughcast, while the rest of the building is weatherboarded. The hipped roof has a shallow pitch, lead hip ridges, and long overhanging eaves with paired brackets.
On the left side of the building, the ground floor has two original sash windows with 16 lights and two with 12 lights, while the first floor has two original sash windows with 4 + 8 lights. The right side mirrors this with two original sash windows of 16 lights on the ground floor and two with 4 + 8 lights on the first floor. Most original sashes still contain crown glass. The rear block also has a hipped slate roof, and the upper storey of the main hall's rear elevation features two sash windows with 12 lights and semi-circular heads. Inside, the church has one storey with a gallery at the southwest end, which has a panelled front supported by cast iron stanchions, added in 1820.
