Description
Butler’s Farmhouse is a house dating to the early 19th century, or possibly earlier. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a thatched roof. The building has a rectangular plan, facing southwest, featuring one axial stack and external stacks at each end. A full-length, single-storey lean-to extension is located at the rear, with a slate roof. The main building is one storey high with attics. Three early 19th century sash windows, each with 24 panes of handmade glass, are set within segmental arches. A 19th century horizontal sash window with 12 panes is set within a gabled dormer. A four-panel door provides access to the property. Shown in the tithe award of 1842, it was associated with a 27-acre farm owned and occupied by Joseph Gurling (as detailed in Essex Record Office, D/CT 413). The interior has not been inspected.
