Description
The Clacton-on-Sea War Memorial features a bronze sculpture of Winged Victory, with her head slightly downcast and dressed in a loose, flowing gown. She holds a quill in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right. The statue is positioned on a layered plinth made of Cornish granite. The upper section of the plinth is inscribed with the dates 1914 - 1918 and 1939 - 1945. The middle section commemorates "THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF / THOSE BRAVE MEN OF CLACTON / WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR." The lower section features a plaque that states, "THIS MEMORIAL IS ALSO DEDICATED / TO THE MEMORY OF ALL THOSE WHO / HAVE SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES IN / ALL OTHER CONFLICTS." Both the right and left sides of the plinth are adorned with bronze wreaths, each accompanied by plaques listing the names of those who fell in the First World War (on the right) and the Second World War (on the left). The entire structure rests on a two-step base.
