Description
This row of five street lights, located on the south side of the Esplanade between Lancaster Gardens and Connaught Gardens in Clacton-on-Sea, was installed around 1912. They are notable for being the first electric street lights in Clacton. Made of cast iron, the tall posts feature two double bands adorned with central heart motifs, and their bases are decorated with moulded rings. The columns are reeded and have moulded circles, rings, and beadlets, topped with acanthus vases that also have moulded rings and reeding. Each post is crowned with large, ring-moulded lidded urns with finials, and the urn sides are embellished with acanthus mouldings. Two pendant brackets curve outward from the urn rims, each supporting circular lamps with terminal urns that have square heads and finials. The brackets are held by continuous curved and angled supports, which are connected to curved and angled panels featuring acanthus moulding. These lights are visually appealing, resembling double pendants, and represent a rare survival of their kind in Essex.
