Description

Cupola House, formerly known as Lunts, is a house located on Paglesham Road, dating from the early 19th century but incorporating features from an earlier period. The building is constructed of red brick and has a red plain tiled roof with end chimney stacks, a parapet, and parapet verges. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and has a three-window range featuring small paned vertically sliding sashes with gauged brick arches. The windows on the right and left are tripartite, and there are smaller arches over the basement windows.

Access to the central doorway is via semi-circular steps. The doorway is topped by a moulded semi-circular canopy supported by pilasters and circular columns with moulded capitals and bases. The door itself is a two-panel, four-light design with tracery in the fanlight, a moulded surround, and a segmental head. Historical records indicate that Thomas Midwinter lived at "Lunts" in 1697. A Georgian facade with a cupola, which has since been demolished, was added to the house in 1803 by Thomas Browning, whose initials can be found by the front door.
