Description
The Foulness Island War Memorial is a rectangular pillar dating to the aftermath of the First World War, erected to commemorate those who died in both World Wars. The pillar is topped by an orb featuring a finial, draping swags, and a small shield bearing the dates 1914/1919. A carving of two crossed rifles, backed by leaves, adorns the front face of the pillar. The pillar stands upon a square base. The front face of the base is inscribed "To the Glory of God / AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF / THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR" followed by seven names with their dates of death. The back face of the base reads “To the Glory of God / AND IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF / THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL / IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939-1945” with three names and dates of death. Below this inscription is a plinth inscribed “Be thou faithful unto death.” on the front and “Percy F Smith / Southend” on the back. The entire memorial rests on a stone slab.
