Description

Ridgemarsh Farmhouse, sometimes referred to as Brick House, dates from around 1700 and is constructed of plastered red brick in Flemish bond, which encases the remains of a late 16th century or earlier building. The farmhouse features a red plain tiled roof that extends at the rear, with off-centre chimney stacks on both the left and right; the right stack is large and originates from the 16th or 17th century. The building is two storeys high with attics, and it has a moulded eaves cornice. The front facade includes a three-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes and a central doorway with a segmental head, which contains a 20th-century door.

Inside, the kitchen is located in the outshot and is open to the roof. A small timber-framed room intrudes from the front upper floor into the apex, though its use is unknown. The large red brick back-to-back fireplace has been altered in the 18th or 19th century but appears to be of 16th century origin. The kitchen side features an iron soffit tie to the arch and a bread oven on the left, while the front room side has had the original timber mantel beam cut through. The walls show early through bracing, and the bases of the front room's front and return walls are made of 16th or 17th century red brick in English bond. There is a fireplace with a mantel shelf above, vertically boarded doors, and one wall constructed of dovetailed staggered vertical boards. A cast iron hob grate is present in the bedroom, complete with a moulded segmental head and side hobs, and some rooms have vertically boarded walls. It is suggested that the original house may have been the earliest brick building on the Island and likely served as the centrepiece of a large and profitable farm.
