Description
Great Wheatley Farmhouse is a house with origins dating back to the 16th century or earlier, featuring 18th-century extensions and later alterations, including a 19th-century east wing. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a hipped red plain tiled roof. It has two storeys and a cellar, with a well-proportioned façade that includes a three-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes. A five-step approach leads to a central two-panel, four-light door, which is topped by a fanlight and flanked by fluted pilasters with capitals and bases, a patera, and a moulded flat canopy.
A notable feature is the full-width lead-roofed cast iron verandah, which has an ornate cornice, eight pierced supports, and decorative rails. The left side of the house includes a gabled 19th-century range. Inside, there are heavy chamfered bridging joists, flat section ceiling beams, and side girts from the original construction. The cellar contains wine niches. The interior also features 18th-century and 19th-century vertically boarded doors with ironmongery, as well as 18th-century six-panel doors with moulded surrounds and wainscots. The ground floor front windows are fitted with panelled vertically sliding shutters, while other windows have reveal shutters. A dog leg stick staircase with mouldings on the open string and a wreathed ground floor newel adds to the character. The house includes a foliate cast iron fire surround and another similar surround.
