Description
The walled garden located to the south of The George and Dragon Public House and adjacent to the churchyard dates back to the 18th century. It is constructed of vari-coloured local brick, with the west wall next to the churchyard standing approximately 3 metres tall, while the other walls are about 1.3 metres tall. Historically, in the 1790s, the licensee of The George and Dragon, Amelia Bennewith, hosted bare fist fights within the garden, which led to the churchyard wall being raised to prevent the fights from being visible from the church. These fights continued until the mid-19th century. This information comes from R.W. Crump, Chairman of the Archaeological Society in Foulness, from October 1986.
