Description

Brick House, formerly known as Brickhouse Farmhouse, is a house located on Kelvedon Road in Great Braxted. The building features a rear range that dates from the 17th century or earlier and a front range from the 18th century. The front range is constructed of red brick and has a hipped red tiled roof, with external chimney stacks on both the left and right sides. It has a stepped eaves cornice and stands two storeys tall, featuring a five-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes. The central entrance is a recessed door with four panels and two lights, set in a moulded surround.

The rear range is timber framed and plastered, also featuring a moulded eaves cornice. Inside, there are some exposed timber framing details, along with notable 18th-century features such as wainscots, doors with wrought hinges, and pine surrounds around the fireplaces. There is also an alcove cupboard and a stone fireplace with sunk spandrels that have been sourced from elsewhere. The building includes round-headed windows. Notably, Dr. Martin Shaw, a composer known for many hymns including "Hills of the North Rejoice," lived in this building.
