Description
This barn, dating from around 1500, is located immediately southeast of Crabb's Farmhouse in Kelvedon. It is timber framed, covered with weatherboarding, and has a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The barn consists of four bays arranged in a northwest-southeast orientation, featuring a 17th-century midstrey to the southwest of the second bay from the northwest end. There is a lean-to extension at the southern angle, creating a catslide roof that connects with the main roof. The midstrey has double vehicle doors, which are boarded above and include one 20th-century window. The southeast end of the roof is hipped.
Architectural details include jowled posts, curved tension bracing set outside heavy studding, edge-halved and bridled scarfs in the wallplates, arched braces to cambered tiebeams, and a crownpost roof with axial bracing. The northwest end of the barn is integrated with the southeast bay of the farmhouse, and the original wattle and daub infill in this wall is nearly complete. The wallplates have been repaired.
