Description

The Cottages is an early 18th-century house, extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed and has been clad in weatherboards, with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The building has five bays facing southwest and two axial stacks. A full-length lean-to extension runs along the rear, and a 20th-century lean-to extension with an asbestos tile roof is located at the right end. A small 20th-century single-storey extension sits in front of the right end of the building. The house is one storey high with attics. On the ground floor, there is one 18th- or early 19th-century sash window with twelve panes, and three 20th-century casement windows. The first floor features three 20th-century casement windows within gabled dormers, and another in a flat-roofed dormer that connects two of the gabled dormers. The building has two 20th-century front doors. The rear catslide roof has three hipped dormers and one recessed dormer. Inside, the house retains chamfered transverse and axial beams with lamb's tongue stops. Original wide wood-burning hearths have been altered to accommodate 20th-century grates. The building has been divided into three separate living units and subsequently combined.
