Description
The Huntsman and Hounds Public House is a house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed, with a plastered and weatherboarded exterior, and features a thatched roof. It has four bays facing south, with an axial stack located in the second bay from the left end.
To the left, there is a 19th-century single-storey extension with an end stack, which is roofed with handmade red clay tiles, along with a smaller extension beyond it. To the right, a 20th-century single-storey extension is made of brick and has a tiled roof. The building is one storey high with attics, featuring six 20th-century casement windows and three additional casements in gabled dormers. A 20th-century door is located at the front of a gabled porch.
Historical documents in the owners' possession describe the property as 'a tenement of 5 acres of customary land called Boswells' from 1700. It was first referred to as 'a beerhouse and now known as The Fox and Hounds' in an indenture from 1869, and by 1897 it had become known as The Huntsman and Hounds.
