Description

Nos. 1-5 on East Street in Tollesbury is a terrace of four cottages, now reduced to three, dating from the 18th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 19th century. The cottages are timber framed and feature a mix of plaster, pebble-dash, and weatherboarding, topped with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The single-span structure faces south and includes two axial stacks, along with four 19th-century rear extensions. There is an additional single-storey rear extension with two axial stacks, covered with red clay pantiles.

The building is one storey high with attics. On the ground floor, the left end has a 19th-century shop window that projects slightly, topped with a slate lean-to roof, which has been converted for domestic use. The front features one early 19th-century sash window with 12 lights and two with 16 lights, along with four 19th-century casements in slated lean-to dormers. A half-glazed door leads to the former shop, and there are three 19th-century flush four-panel doors; one has a simple architrave and moulded canopy, while the others have simple canopies on profiled brackets. The building has a gambrel roof that is half-hipped at both ends. The front elevation is plastered, the right side is weatherboarded, and the left side and rear are pebble-dashed. The four rear wings also have half-hipped gambrel roofs, each featuring a 19th-century horizontal sash window with 16 lights on the first floor.
