Description
Mitchell Farm Barn is a barn that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid to late 16th century, with additions made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. The structure features a timber frame with black-tarred weatherboarding and a thatched roof made of Norfolk reed. There is a lean-to extension on the southwest corner with an old pantile roof, and to the north, there is a single-storey, T-plan range that has been rendered and also has a pantile roof. A 20th-century tiled hipped open porch supported by timber posts is located on the southeast corner, along with a small ridgeline stack.
The barn has a gabled thatched midstrey in the center of its west side, which now features 20th-century glazed doors replacing the original barn doors. Small windows with black-painted frames have been added to the boarding, while the new range includes 20th-century brown-stained casements and some red-brick trim at the eaves and plinth.
Inside, the barn retains a very good quality 16th-century frame that is largely intact, consisting of three bays with jowled posts and an integral midstrey. The long wall braces have a serpentine profile between the posts and roof plates at the corners. The roof features cambered tie beams, which were originally supported by arch braces but now have 18th-century hanging knees. The roof also includes side purlins and serpentine wind braces. The midstrey has door posts on either side with moulded jowl-like profiles.
