Description

This is a mid-17th century timber-framed barn situated to the north-west of Maldon Hall and Mallards. The barn has a plain tile gabled roof and is clad in black weatherboarding. It comprises five bays, with a central gabled midstrey on the south-west side. Lean-to roofed extensions are located on either side of the midstrey, with the south-west extension featuring a slate roof and serving as a granary, with an elevated floor, likely originally supported on staddles, some of which have been reused nearby. A more recent, 20th-century lean-to extension is present on the north-east side.

The interior exhibits high-quality timber framing, with chamfered and jowled posts. Three original braces remain to tie beams, while others have been replaced with elm hanging knees. The side walls feature straight bracing interrupting the studs. The roof structure incorporates V-struts, through purlins, and principal rafters which expand above the purlins. The midstrey is contemporary with the barn and exhibits jowled door posts.
