Description
This barn, located approximately 20 metres south-east of Howe Green Farmhouse, dates back to 1757. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated asbestos. The structure consists of three bays aligned east to west, featuring a midstrey to the south that was converted to a lean-to in the 20th century. There are also lean-to extensions on the north and south sides. The barn has a pegged and jointed hardwood frame with primary straight bracing and arched braces supporting both internal tiebeams. The clasped purlin roof has been rebuilt in the eastern bay. Notably, the south-east post of the midstrey is inscribed with the letter "B." The date of 1757 is confirmed by documentary evidence found in the court roll dated 31 October 1757 at the Essex Record Office. This barn is of exceptional historic interest as firmly dated agricultural buildings are rare.
