Description
The wheel pump and frame, located to the east of the pump house in Steeple, dates from the 19th century. It features a cast iron wheel pump mounted on an original cast iron frame. The pump stem has upper and lower spouts and is supported by a timber post positioned in front of the wheel and frame. The frame consists of two supports with curved sides that enclose a head above two Gothic arches and three similar base arches, with iron side ties. It supports a cranked shaft driven by a balanced, four-spoked hand wheel. The frame has a moulded inscription that reads: "J. Tylor & Sons, Engineers, Warwick Lane, London." This is a rare example of a wheel pump in Essex. Currently, the pump is covered by a 20th-century gabled pump house that includes a seat at the rear.
