Description
This barn, located approximately 40 metres north-east of Norton Hall, dates from the late 18th century. It features a combination of red brick in Flemish bond, timber framing, and weatherboarding, all topped with a slate roof. The structure consists of five bays oriented roughly east-west, with a midstrey on the south side. There are original outshots on either side of the midstrey, which include one plain boarded door and two halved doors, each with plain lights above, all set within segmental arches. The barn has four blocked semi-circular arched openings that were used for dunging passages. The main roof and the midstrey roof are both half-hipped, with slightly curved through bracing. The frame includes face-halved and bladed scarfs, along with hanging knees to the tiebeam and collars. The roof is constructed with lodged side-purlins and a ridge-piece, and the original softwood frame remains intact.
