Description
Marsh House Farmhouse is a house located on Lower Burnham Road in Purleigh. It dates back to the early 17th century and was extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. It features four bays facing south, with an axial stack in the second bay from the left, creating a lobby entrance. There is an 18th-century one-bay extension to the right and an 18th-century rear wing that is one storey high with attics, which has an end stack and a 19th-century bakehouse beyond it. Additionally, there is an 18th-century lean-to extension at the right rear angle that runs the full length of the main range, forming a catslide roof with it. A 19th-century lean-to extension made of red brick in Flemish bond is located in the left rear angle, also forming a catslide with the main roof. The house is two storeys tall and has a four-window range of 19th-century casements with four lights each. A 20th-century door is situated at the front of a gabled porch. The rear wing features a gambrel roof with one gabled dormer on the right. Inside, the exposed floor joists are jointed with soffit tenons that have diminished haunches.
