Description
London Hayes is a house dating from the late 16th century, with an extension added in the 18th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building has four bays facing west and features a 19th or 20th-century axial stack located one bay from the left end. The 18th-century extension is at the rear of the left end, and there is a 20th-century conservatory to the left of this extension.
The main range of the house has two storeys, while the extension is one storey with attics. On the west elevation, there are two 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor. A 20th-century door is set in the original doorway, which has moulded jambs and a hollow-chamfered four-centred arched head with floral carving in the spandrels. The left end of the house is jettied and plastered over. The roof features a gablet hip at the north end and shaped sprockets on three sides of the main roof. Some close studding is visible internally.
Inside, there is a chamfered transverse beam with step stops, supported on half-height jowls, located one bay from the right end. This section has plain joists of vertical section. In the right end, there is a blocked doorway with mutilated moulded jambs and a four-centred arched head with recessed spandrels, along with part of an original window that has two moulded mullions, rebated for early glazing. On the rear elevation, the ground floor has one doorway with moulded jambs and a moulded straight head, as well as a blocked original doorway with a plain head. Another blocked original doorway is reported to be present on the first floor at the left end of the rear elevation, which is now plastered over. The first floor and roof were not inspected but are reported to have been much altered. This house is part of a larger high-status residence that once extended to the rear.
