Description

The Fawbert and Barnards School, formerly a British School dating from 1836, is constructed of stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern. It is a single-story building with two-story wing sections flanking a central range. The roof is slated and hipped, with a parapet coped with moulded stone, and has two stock brick chimneys spaced evenly along its length. The plan forms a U-shape. The central range features a stuccoed portico with two Doric columns and two pilasters, a flat entablature, and a pair of fielded panel door leaves topped by a rectangular fanlight. A first-floor band sits above the door, containing margin-barred sash windows on either side, each set beneath a straight-gaugued arch. Above that are three small multi-paned sash windows, again with straight-gaugued arches. The central elevation also has two tall round-headed sash windows. The two end units have pilasters at their centres, with returns featuring stock brick capitals. These ends also have two tall round-headed sashes each, and three matching sashes on their outer elevations.
