Description

Chambers Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, featuring exposed framing only at the front, and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building includes a three-bay crosswing that is aligned approximately northwest to southeast and jettied at the front but underbuilt. The remaining part of the hall house to the southwest was rebuilt in the 17th century and has a central chimney stack. There is a continuous northeast-southwest roof over the front part of the crosswing, creating a lobby-entrance house, and the rear part of the crosswing has been re-roofed. An external chimney stack is located at the northeast end.

In the southern angle, there is a stair tower from the 17th century, with a lean-to extension to the southwest of the stair tower, added in the 18th or 19th century, and a porch situated between it and the crosswing, which dates to the 19th century. The farmhouse has two storeys and features a two-window range of 19th and 20th-century casements. Inside, there are chamfered beams with step stops in the crosswing and lamb's tongue stops in the southwest section. The roof of the crosswing was originally constructed with crownposts but has been completely rebuilt above the tiebeam level to a clasped purlin construction. The stair to the attic retains an original 17th-century plain newel, handrail, and treads.
