Description
Crown House is a house dating from the early 17th century, with extensions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with roughcast rendering and is roofed with handmade red clay tiles. The building has four bays aligned approximately southwest to northeast, with an axial chimney stack located between the two northeastern bays and an external stack at the southwest gable. There is a rear wing from the 19th or 20th century, as well as a 20th-century extension in the eastern angle extending to the northeast. Lean-to extensions are present at the northeast end and at the rear of the southwest chimney stack. The house is two storeys high with attics and has a three-window range of 20th-century casements. The entrance features a six-panel door in a trellised porch topped with a concave lead roof. In front of the shaft of the southwest chimney stack, there is a recessed panel with a round-arched head. Inside, there are chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops over the lower room on the southwest side. The roof has joggled butt purlins and includes some smoke-blackened timbers from a medieval hall house. The dog-leg stairs leading to the first floor and attic are mainly from the 17th century, with 20th-century balusters.
