Description
The Sheering War Memorial is made of Portland stone and is located at the junction of The Street and Church Lane in the center of Sheering. It features a tapering Latin cross with chamfered sides, and a sword is carved in relief on the head and upper part of the northern face of the shaft. The cross is set on a moulded, stepped octagonal base, which is supported by an octagonal column, all raised on a four-tier stepped plinth.
On the north face of the column, there is an inscription that reads: "THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED TO THE GLORY OF GOD WHO GAVE US THE VICTORY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." Below this, the base is inscribed with "WORLD WAR II 1939-1945," along with the names of five individuals who fell during the Second World War. The east face of the column honors "THE 20 MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY." The south face recognizes "THE WOMEN WHO NURSED THE SICK AND WOUNDED," while the western face commemorates "THE 120 MEN OF THE PARISH WHO JOINED HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES." Between the inscriptions on each face of the column are the names of the 20 men who fell in the First World War.
