Description
The Old House is a late medieval house that was altered in the 16th and 17th centuries and extended in the 20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building consists of three bays aligned northeast-southwest. A chimney stack was inserted in the middle bay around 1600. There is a lean-to extension with a chimney stack to the southeast, dating from the 20th century, and another extension to the northeast added in 1970.
The house has two storeys, with the northwest elevation featuring a tiled gabled porch and three casement windows. On the first floor, there are four casement windows, all from the 20th century. The main chimney stack has diagonal shafts located to the northwest of the ridge. Some of the framing is exposed internally, showcasing jowled wallposts and heavy studding with external bracing. Originally, the house was only one storey high, and a floor was inserted in the early 17th century. The axial beams are chamfered, with joists chamfered only in the southwest bay, featuring lamb's tongue stops. The walls were raised by approximately one metre in the 17th century, with chamfered axial beams above the upper rooms, also with lamb's tongue stops.
