Description
The Homestead is a house from the early 17th century, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, featuring exposed framing only on the front of the first floor. The roof is covered with 20th-century red tiles. The building consists of four bays arranged approximately east-west, with an axial chimney stack located in the second bay from the west and an external chimney stack at the eastern gable. There is a lean-to extension at the western end. The house has two storeys and a three-window range of 20th-century casements, along with a 20th-century tiled gabled porch.
Internally, some framing is exposed, showcasing jowled wall posts, straight tie beams, and curved bracing that is trenched inside the studs throughout most of the house. The western bay features straight bracing that is also trenched inside the studs. The beams are chamfered with lamb's tongue stops, and the roof has clasped purlins. A straight joint exists between the western bay and the rest of the house, indicating that while both sections date to the early 17th century, the western bay is slightly later. Historical records, such as the Walker map of 1609, indicate that a single-storey house existed on this site, but the current structure was built as a two-storey house from the beginning and is not an adaptation of the earlier building, although the chimney stack may be the same.
