Description
Tadgells is a hall house dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed and has been plastered and weatherboarded, with the timber framing exposed at the front. It is roofed with handmade red clay tiles. The original 2-bay hall is aligned east-west, with an integrated service area at the east end, likely dating from the 15th or earlier century. A chimney stack was inserted into the east bay of the hall in the 16th century, preserving the original cross-entry. A crosswing was added at the west end in the 17th or 18th century, and a rear stair extension was constructed in the 20th century. A bakehouse/dairy has been linked to the main building in the 20th century; this is built of red brick in a Flemish bond and has a pyramidal roof of handmade red clay tiles. External chimney stacks are present at both the east and west ends, along with a small 20th-century extension to the east of the east end stack. The building is single-storied with attics. A plain door with a glass pane sits within a tiled gabled porch, and there are three casement windows and four tiled gabled dormers – all dating to the 20th century. The roof is half-hipped. Some timber framing is exposed internally, including jowled wallposts and a cambered central tiebeam in the hall. The roof was originally of crownpost construction, though the crownposts have been removed. An inserted floor in the hall has a chamfered axial beam and joists, both with step stops.
