Description
This building is a small barn or byre located 50 meters north-north-east of Shellow Hall. It dates from the mid 16th century to the 17th century and is constructed of timber framing and brick, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof that has a hip on the north side and a half hip on the south side. The barn consists of five bays, with the three southern bays being a rebuild from the early 17th century, featuring lean-tos on the west side, flanking a hipped midstrey. The two northern bays have a simple crownpost roof, arched braces to the tie beams, and compression braces in the corners. Some alternate studs have been removed and infilled with 19th-century red brick. The other three bays feature arch-braced tie beams, early reused posts, a queen post roof with side purlins, and reused crownpost rafters that show some soot staining. The south end and part of the east wall have been rebuilt in 20th-century blockwork.
