Description
The Farm House is a farmhouse, originally constructed in the mid to late 16th century, with later alterations from the 17th century. It was restored in 1988. The building features weatherboard over a timber frame, with the left gable end displaying close studding and angle bracing to the tie beams. The cill plates, wall plates, main posts, and trusses are preserved, with 20th-century brick infill. The roof is gabled and covered with old tiles, topped by a brick ridge stack with a diagonally-set shaft. The layout consists of three units, where the 17th-century house had an open hall flanked by a service bay on the right and a parlour on the left. It is aligned east-west, with the west bay on the left. The house has one storey and an attic, featuring a three-window range, two 20th-century doors, and 20th-century windows, along with a large central dormer added in 1988.
Inside, there is a three-bay collar-truss roof with clasped purlins and jowled posts, which have angle braces to the tie beams. The central and right-hand bays contain split oak common rafters. A close-studded partition separates these bays, featuring downward-curved passing braces and a doorway to the front, with wattle and daub infill above the truss. The right-end wall retains close studding between the tie beam and middle rail. This building is an unusually late example of an open hall house, which had its floor inserted in the late 17th or early 18th century, with jointing techniques that support its mid to late 16th-century date.
