Description

The Cottage is a small house dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the 17th century and extensions added in the 20th century. It features a timber frame that is plastered with a zigzag combed pattern in panels and is roofed with 20th-century corrugated red tiles. The building consists of four bays aligned approximately east to west, with a northern aspect. There is an axial chimney stack located in the second bay from the western end, topped with a catslide roof and similar tiles. A 20th-century porch is situated at the western end. An external chimney stack is found at the eastern end, which is enclosed by a single-storey extension built around 1970; this extension has a mainly flat roof with some courses of concrete pantiles around the edge. The Cottage is single-storey with attics and features a plain boarded door, three 20th-century casement windows, and one swept dormer with a 20th-century casement window. The roof is half-hipped at both ends. Some of the framing is exposed internally, showcasing jowled wall posts and a cambered central tie beam with arch braces. The middle bays were originally open to the roof, but a chimney and floor were inserted in the early 17th century, and the axial beam is chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. The floor in the eastern bay was rebuilt in the 20th century.
