Description
St Albright's Hospital, built in 1837, was formerly the Colchester workhouse and designed by Scott and Moffatt. It features a cruciform plan with an octagonal central block and is two storeys high. The building is constructed of red brick with grey slate roofs. It has double hung vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars, along with some modern casements, all set in segmental brick arches. The Masters House, also two storeys, is made of red brick and has a grey slate hipped roof, featuring a four-window range of double hung vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars and a modillioned eaves course. The large flat-roofed central porch is a notable feature. The layout includes a central octagon, cruciform wings, a perimeter range, and the Masters House, while the laundry and 20th-century outbuildings are not of special interest.
