Description

Cheshunts is a house dating from around 1680, with later additions including a parallel range at the rear and extensions at both ends. The main (west) range is likely timber framed and has been cased in brick. It is two storeys high, topped with a ridged, gabled roof covered in peg tiles. There is a gault brick chimney stack located one bay from the left and another on the right gable. The wide moulded eaves cornice supports a five-window range of double-hung sashes with glazing bars, and there are shutters on the first floor. The central door is set in a wide case with a pediment and dentils, featuring a leaf-glazed upper half with marginal bars. Matching windows are located to the left and right of the door.

To the right (south) is an addition made of painted brick, consisting of two parallel ranges with low-pitched, slated roofs. The windows in this section are irregular and of mixed types, and there is one red brick chimney stack. The rear range is taller, has a parapet, and is faced in gault brick with coped gables.

The east front features a central door accessed by three stone steps, with a glazed top and a fanlight above. This is flanked by two fluted Ionic columns and two pilaster responds, all beneath a moulded entablature. The wall is designed with three blind arcades made of gauged gault brick. The first storey has three tripartite sashes, while the ground storey has two pairs of windows on both the left and right sides, with one bay set back on the right and a pilastered return.
