Description

27 Head Street is a house dating from the early 15th century. It has a timber frame that was faced in brick in the mid-18th century. An additional gault brick range was added to the front in the early 19th century, and the building has plaintiled roofs. It was converted into a public house, known as the Alexandra, in the late 19th century and later became a shop in the mid-20th century.

The east facade has three storeys and two window ranges. It features early 20th-century double-fronted display windows with a recessed doorway to the left of center. The display windows have curved glass, a tiled plinth, and side panels, along with a plain fascia board and canopy box. The entrance door is half-glazed, and there is a late 20th-century six-panelled door leading to a passageway on the right side of the elevation. Each floor above has two 6/6 unhorned sashes with painted stucco surrounds, and there are paired soffit brackets at the eaves. The building has no stacks. The rear of the early 15th-century structure is two storeys high with three window ranges. There is a passageway to the left, below a four-paned single-light casement on the first floor. The centre of the first floor has a two-light 20th-century casement, and to the right, there is a 3/3 unhorned sash. A cross wing to the south features one 12/12 horizontally sliding sash at the first floor.

Inside, there are remains of a panelled public house counter in the east ground-floor room, with quadrant panelling above. The rest of the ground floor has been opened into a single retail area. There is one chamfered 17th-century bridging beam and a stick-baluster staircase with an oval handrail and rectangular newels. The upper rooms of both ranges lack ornamentation or fittings. The smoke-blackened roof of the rear range includes one square section crown post with straight braces to the crown purlin (one brace is missing) and an additional post at the north and south ends, along with common rafters and trenched collars.
