Description

Messing Park is an early 18th-century house constructed of pale red brick, which underwent extensive alterations in the early 19th century when a facade was added to three sides in grey gault brick. The building is two storeys high, with the northeast front featuring a five-window range of double hung, vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars. The central section of the front projects forward and includes a fine Doric porch, topped by a parapet wall. Originally, there was a 'Venetian' window and a pediment at the parapet level, but these have been removed.

The northwest front has two two-storey bays that are serpentine in plan, with a central doorway and double hung vertical sliding sashes built along the curve. The southeast front features double hung sashes set in recessed segmental arches with pilasters, and there is a high brick plinth. The roofs are a combination of grey slate and red plain tiles, hipped in style.

At the rear, there are 19th and 20th-century extensions that connect with 18th-century brick outbuildings, which also have two-storey red plain tile roofs. The rear windows include two semi-circular headed 18th-century casements. Inside, there is a fine staircase dating from around 1700, featuring a moulded handrail and turned balusters. The doors, ironmongery, ceiling covings, and fireplace surrounds are all of high quality and date from around 1800. The cellars contain some 16th-century brickwork and a 16th-century mullioned window that is not in its original position.
