Description
44 to 52 Head Street is a fine red brick Georgian building constructed between 1763 and 1765. The ground floor has been extensively altered for modern shop premises, but the upper storeys still retain much of their original character. The main block consists of three storeys, with the centre front projecting forward under a pediment. A continuous parapet runs around the building, and there is a modillion brick cornice below. The roofs are tiled.
The front features a seven-window range of double hung sashes, although the original glazing bars have largely been replaced with plate glass. At the rear, there is a two-storeyed wing with a parapet and a five-window range on the east side, which includes double hung sashes with glazing bars, a central arched window in the upper storey, and three hipped dormers. The south addition has a parapet and a modillioned brick cornice, a three-window range, and a belvedere in the centre of the roof.
Nos 44 to 62 form a group with No 17 Sir Isaac's Walk.
